Calendar of Colour – Monthly Speaker

2016-10-13-09-49-58Before this month’s meeting the Ukulele Group entertained us to a brief recital. The Festival Hall doesn’t lend itself to this kind of event but they did really well and a number of people were standing around listening as the group went through their repertoire.

Janette MerilionThe talk by Janette Merilion was called a Calendar of Colours and she talked us through the months with a flower, shrubs and a tree. She started by explaining the structure of her talk so that we all understood the journey she was taking us on. Her approach was professional and confident. Throughout her extremely well presented talk she introduced amusing anecdotes, history of some of the plants and details of where to grow the plants she was introducing us to. A complete list of the plants will be posted to the website in due course…

If West Wolds U3A had a prize for “speaker of the year” Janette would certainly come into the top three.

To be honest, I was not looking forward to listening to someone talk about plants however, Janette’s professionalism as a speaker soon became very evident and quickly captured my attention. It was abundantly clear that not only is she is an experienced horticulturalist, but she has a veritable love affair with plants and her enthusiasm is almost catching.
I guess her background in marketing has enabled her to ‘cultivate’ the knack of being able to convey information that some might consider drab and boring and make it interesting and almost fun to listen to. It wasn’t long before even I was making notes on her handout with a view to discussing them later with my husband. Her factual knowledge knew no bounds and was interspersed with amusing anecdotes and clear explanations of the Latin names most people struggle with. Her sharp photographs ably depicted the plants that she recommends will provide all year round colour and interest, and her suggestions for birthday plants was very useful.
I have to say I was inspired by her erudition and she is definitely one of the most exceptional if not the best speaker I have heard on her subject. If or when we ever decide to downsize, I would definitely consider commissioning her garden design business.

unfortunately I couldn’t attend. But John was impressed and has said he thought she was the best this year.
